Diwali 21Oct 2006

Diwali the festival of lights is celebrated all over India. Diwali comes exactly twenty days after navarathri. Kids love it because they get to where new clothes and blow crackers. Every household has Laxmi pooja being performed. Friends and family get together to exchange gifts and sweets.

Living in a foriegn land we didnot burst crackers. But we had some sparklers which the kids had fun with. Also I prepared some sweets. We distrubuted among our friends and relatives who live closeby. We also visited the temple.

I could not update my blog on diwali day since I was very busy with preparations. But here it is.

If you think deeply what is Cooking ? It is a combination of method, measurement, ingredients, tools and skill and interest of the person. Recipes help a person to start cooking. Once you get an idea of it, we try to make variations and come up with own versions. Also we tend to look from the health perspective.

In India, food, culture, religion, and regional festivals are all closely related.

Rice, Wheat, Pulses, Spices, Milk and Milk Products are mainly used ingredients.

Food is considered to be sacred in India. For the same reason we offer food (cooked rice or boiled milk) everyday morning to God before consuming.

When I was small I was always taught not to waste food in my plate, my mom would say food is Ummachi (God).

On festive days special kind of sweets and savories are made offered to God and distributed among friends and relatives.

I have always heard people saying Cooking is an Art. Yes it is. It is not only making delicious food, but also presenting it. It proved right in my own house. I usually buy pickles from the Indian store. One day I was shopping for some cute containers and I came across small glass containers which I thought will be nice to store pickles. I bought them came home and transferred my store pickles. We had some guest over during the weekend and I kept them on the table along with other food. My husband opened the jar smelled them and asked me whether I made some mango pickles. I smiled .Guests were asking whether they were from India, they started praising home made pickles and I just smiled again. After every body was gone I told my husband what I had done. A simple presentation like a special platter or garnishing the food can add more compliment to your food. Usually in India presentation of food will be on a thali, earthenware bowls or banana leaves. But living in a foreign country my presentation will be very simple, more on CorningWare plates and bowls.

I have created this blog to post some of the dishes I make on a daily basis mostly dishes made in Palakkad Iyer houses. I have adapted recipes from my mother, grandmother, books, internet and some of them my own . I try to diversify my cooking too, so you might see some North Indian and Western food. Also whenever festivals come I try to make some snacks and will update them in my blog. Also the measurements I have given are approximate.
